Nevertheless, the thick formula has made it possible for many buyers to enjoy shiny, nourished, and supple hair. Despite its custard-like thickness, this mask won't actually weigh down hair. Olive oil is pretty thick, so it often requires good effort once you’re ready to remove it. Level it up with a drop or two of essential oil for additional hair perfume.

Caps can also ward off breakouts from conditioners making unintentional contact with your skin. While you're stocking your beauty shelf with a sulfate-free deep conditioner, consider other curl-friendly, natural hair products, such as sulfate-free shampoos. These hair masks work harder than run-of-the-mill shower conditioners, whether they’re used in ten-to-fifteen minute intervals or applied overnight. In the immediate term, “Deep conditioners bring moisture back to the hair and help reduce hair breakage,” Kimble explains. In the long term, they defend against dry, brittle hair while making it shiny, bouncy, and soft.

When it comes to dry and damaged hair, sometimes a daily conditioner just doesn't cut it. Your hair may need a little extra boost of hydration and nourishment to get back to its healthy, shiny state. "Deep conditioners, also known as hair masks, are rinse-off products that are used a few times a week in place of a regular conditioner," says Danusia Wnek, senior chemist at The Good Housekeeping Institute.

Comfortable with both cutting and coloring, he is particularly enthusiastic about creating lasting, structured looks. When shopping for a deep conditioner for your hair, Grace says there are some key things you need to keep in mind. Not only should you consider your hair type, but you should also know how to apply your mask to get the best results. "To make an informed choice on a deep conditioner, it’s important to pinpoint [your] specific hair concerns," she explains.

The tighter your curls, the more likely you are to get knots and tangles. That's why Smith recommends this pick for tightly coiled hair types. "The consistency is rich and it perfectly coats each curl," she says. When it comes to deep treatments, you usually have to set aside at least 20 to 30 minutes for it to work its magic. For those days when you're in a rush, reach for this drugstore option. All you need is three minutes, which is basically the amount of time it takes to do a quick shave and rinse.

Are deep conditioners good for your hair?

National Artistic Educator and stylist for The Salon by InStyle Inside JCPenney Kellie Ferraro says this potent formula is one of her go-tos for treating curly strands. "This deep conditioner helps to reduce breakage by 70% and helps to moisturize and soften the hair," she says. The combo of aloe-leaf juice, cupuaçu butter, and apricot kernel helps to deeply condition the hair and increase moisture retention. If there's one thing that's helped me maintain some kind of control with my curly hair, it's been the consistent use of deep conditioners.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

Yes, this restorative treatment works wonders on its own, but when paired with heat for deep steam, it turns your head into a bed of pillow-soft strands, making it easier for your follow-up products to penetrate seamlessly. Living Proof’s Overnight Perfector mask does all the work while you catch up on your beauty sleep. The pillow-safe treatment can be used once a week for visibly healthier and shiner hair that lasts between washes. For those with a similar hair type, you're going to want to keep reading below. I'm sharing my favorites along with recommendations for all hair types from NYC hairstylist and salon owner Mahogany Grace. While it's not the best at detangling thick or curly manes, the silicone-free formula adds noticeable volume and lightweight moisture to fine, flat hair.

We wish it contained more nourishing oils for added hydration benefits, but we love it for its strengthening and protecting benefits. The Cantu Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque is one of the most popular deep conditioners for 4c hair. These ingredients infuse hair with moisture and help to restore its strength. The Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque from SheaMoisture is one of the most nourishing deep conditions for 4c hair.

If it’s within your hair budget, a salon service like this can help repair hair and reduce brittleness and breakage. Every single one of our experts agree that you should not wash your hair every day. But just how many washes you need in a week can vary, depending on both your hair type and your lifestyle. "I love that this is an ultra-rich mask packed with vitamins and nutrients to moisturize, soften, and give you smooth-looking hair." It’s also a good idea to deep condition your hair before you get it chemically treated (i.e., lightened, straightened, or permed). Since sebum travels most easily down the hair to lubricate straight and loose curled strands, people with tight curls may find they need to deep condition more often.

Kimble recommends taking a moment to deep condition once a week, or once every two weeks. “People with natural hair should deep condition on their wash days to regain those vital minerals," she adds. Ceramides work to smooth the hair shaft while prickly pear oil helps hydrate and soften, thanks to its high concentration of vitamin E.

I love that the hydration it delivers lasts for quite a bit of time and a little of the product goes a long way to cover my thick, curly hair. Angel Cardona, a top stylist with Sebastian Professional, explains why this is the extra step your haircare routine might be missing. "A deep conditioner tends to be a thicker, richer, stronger conditioning treatment that will strengthen, repair, and/or hydrate your hair," he says. Implementing these treatments in your regular hair care routine will take it to a whole new level.

Best Deep Conditioner for Bleached Hair

It caters toward hair goals like thickening, anti-frizz and heat protection. If you're willing to splurge a bit more for volume, you can't go wrong with Kerastasé. Give your hair that "just-washed" look with the shampoo-conditioner duo that rated highest in our Lab tests for leaving clean-feeling hair post-rinse.

Breathe life back into dry curls with this deep conditioner that moisturizes the hair while adding curl definition, frizz control, and shine. Monica Stevens is a big fan of this curl restoring treatment because the hairstylist created it—plus, it works. This treatment is key to balancing "moisture and proteins in the strands," she says.

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque

Nature Lab’s leave-in conditioner is a spray with a foam texture that restores damaged and color-treated hair. It contains keratin and argan oil, eliminating frizz and leaving hair full of luster. This bond-repairing deep conditioner uses a patented, tongue-twisting ingredient called bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate to reconnect broken hair bonds caused by excessive hair coloring and chemical treatments. And surprisingly, it’s low in proteins and moisture, making it perfect for damaged hair that’s also fine, thin, and easily weighed down. Smooth it through your hair once every two weeks to repair your hair, and make sure to incorporate a moisture-only deep conditioner once a week too to hydrate.

This deep conditioner from Camille Rose Naturals is an excellent option for those with dry, damaged, or colour-treated hair. It’s infused with organic blue-green algae and other natural ingredients that help to nourish your locks and restore their health. Algae Renew Deep Conditioner is also free of sulphates, parabens, phthalates, and gluten, making it a good choice for sensitive skin.

If your hair is low porosity (water sits on top of the hair and doesn't sink in easily), you might want to consider a deep conditioner. If you have high porosity hair (hair soaks up water quickly), consider using a deep conditioner and a bond builder like K18 or Olaplex. While you might need a deep conditioner because you bleached your hair in the first place, it's not unheard of to want an additional color refresh.

The formula is made from 97 percent naturally-derived ingredients including algae extract to enhance the hair’s natural moisture and hydrate dry strands. If you have fine hair, opt for a lightweight formula that won’t feel greasy or thick, like the Kevin Murphy Angel Mask. Someone with thicker tresses or color-treated hair will need something more hydrating. For those with curly hair, choose a conditioner with ingredients that will keep curls bouncy and intact while also providing shine and hydration, like the Jessicurl Deep Conditioning Treatment. If you don’t love the idea of a thick cream-based mask, then opt for a leave-in treatment instead.

The 5 Best Hair Bleach Kits for Amateurs in 2024

best bleach for hair

“Protein, moisture, bond repair, and a heat protectant should be included in a bleached hair routine. In general, healthy virgin hair tends to lighten more quickly since it hasn’t undergone any chemical processing. First-timers should be especially cautious about letting bleach sit for longer than necessary. The same goes for fine hair types, as fine strands lift faster than thick or coarse ones. Whether you’re toying with going blonde or are ready to swap your espresso mane for a trendy pastel pink, your transformation will likely require a round (or two) of hair bleach. You may think visiting a colorist is the only way to achieve the shade pinned to your vision board, but that’s far from the only option nowadays.

L’Oréal Quick Blue Powder: Best bleach for brown hair

But before we start, a few things you must read up on before you bleach and tone. My personal favorite is the Matrix Total Results Brass Off, but there are tons of great purple shampoos to choose from. Once all the necessary materials and prep have been done (and you’ve fully committed to going blonde) you’re ready to make the bleach mixture. This is where the strand test comes in handy again, as you will know what your hair will look like after bleaching. It will save you potential headaches later on, as you will know what to expect. In the pack you will receive cream bleach, accelerator, mixing cup, and a spatula.

Use your hair clips to divide your dry, unwashed hair into four manageable sections. Brush your bleach mixture evenly over each section of hair, starting about one inch down from your roots. This placement is key since your roots tend to process more quickly from your body heat. Once you evenly saturate every section of hair with bleach, sweep it onto your roots last. If you’re a fan of bright colours and interesting shades, you’ve almost definitely heard of Bleach London.

To do a strand test it may be easiest to cut off a small strand, around 2 inches, from the back on the underside of your hair so it won’t be noticeable. You can also do the test without cutting by separating a strand and tying it off. As the tube contains quite a small amount of the bleach, it is the perfect product for root touch-ups. You can, however, dilute the developer to your liking with water to obtain the volume you want. Byrdie contributor Esme Benjamin checked and updated this article in December 2023 to ensure every detail was correct and each product deserves its place on Byrdie’s list.

What bleach is best for black hair?

Because of this it’s highly advised to get a toner to achieve a good result. The bleach powder is de-dusted and contains ingredients that provide a non-drip cream when mixed with a developer. The kaolin in the formula keeps the moisture to prevent the cream from drying out as you work. L’Oreal is the pioneer in hair highlighting, with the founder of the company discovering that hydrogen peroxide is a safe way to lighten your hair.

Keep in mind that you should wait for at least two weeks after you bleach your hair before you start using the purple shampoo. Your strands will be porous and highly absorbent the first weeks after lightening, and purple-tinted products can change your hair color. For bleaching your hair, you’ll need bleach powder or liquid and a developer. The developer opens your hair cuticles to allow the pigment to leave the hair shaft.

A DIY bleach job gone wrong can lead to frizzy, parched, straw-like hair. "Hydrogen peroxide in hair coloring kits opens up the hair cuticles and some of the natural pigments in hair will leech out and give a lighter color," says King. "If you apply hair colorant and seal in with a conditioner, then that's how you color hair." Hair strands with a fine texture are more prone to damage than coarse or medium hair.

If you fall into the fine hair camp, deep conditioning masks can take all the volume out of your hair and leave you with lifeless, flat-as-can-be roots. Its vitamin-enriched, oil-infused, and shea butter-centric formula delivers lightweight hydration that can't be beaten. If bleach is just a pit stop on your way to a more vibrant shade, now may be the time to apply your color. Temporary, semi-, and demi-permanent dyes are typically fine to use post-bleaching. However, if you plan to apply permanent dye to your bleached hair, it’s best to wait a few days or weeks to give your strands time to recover. A week before bleaching, it’s also a good idea to limit your hot tool usage.

The inclusion of succinic acid is at the heart of the advanced bonding system. The acid is a patented ingredient that forms bridges in the hair structure, resulting in healthier, less damaged hair. This is very important, as cysteine bridges are broken during the oxidation, resulting in weakened and brittle hair. The Manic Panic bleach kit is the most popular option among at-home-bleachers, and for a good reason. The company has been creating cruelty-free, vegan products since the late 70s.

We’ve looked at the 5 best hair bleach kits that can help you achieve salon-quality results in the comfort of your own home. Hair color depth is measured in levels from 1 (darkest black/brown) to 10 (lightest blonde). Identifying your current hair color depth is essential to choose the bleach powder that will work best on your locks. Overall, our favorite professional hair bleach is Wella Blondor Powder Lightener, a colorist-recommended formula that offers gentle lifting while minimizing yellowish tones.

Hair color consists of the main color as well as the undertone – similarly to your skin. The color itself is quite easy to get out, but then what you’re left with is the undertone. Red pigments are harder to oxidize and remove out of the hair shaft, causing the brassy tint after bleaching. Check out the chemistry corner if you’re interested in the science behind natural hair color. Much more gentle than the standard hair bleach, this uses only hydrogen peroxide for the bleaching process.

As the daughter of a long-time hair stylist and salon owner, she’s spent most of her life as a guinea pig for new color and cut techniques. Writing for respected publications like Forbes and HuffPost, she’s committed to bringing her passion for great hair to the masses. You’ve seen all the things you need to consider to pick the best bleach powder for your needs. Now, let’s tie it all up by addressing a few more key concerns before you bleach. The developer volume you’ll be using will help you narrow your bleach options to pick the best one for you. The next step here is determining which hair bleach is going to be the right one for your specific needs.

Using bleach and a developer that is too strong for your hair has a chance of literally melting your hair off. As mentioned before, do a strand test to ensure that your hair will be fine with the chosen bleach and developer, and you can continue with the peace of mind that your hair will turn out gorgeous. The order of application of bleach is non-negotiable – first midsections and ends, then roots. The midsection starts between 1 ½ to 2 inches away from the scalp, and you want to work from this point down the strand all the way to the ends. Before you start you should brush your hair to get out any tangles and knots.

Step 4: Bleach your roots

The goal is to have manageable segments that you can handle easily to thoroughly apply the bleach to every single hair strand. If you got a whole kit such as the Manic Panic Flash Kit, then all you need is an old t-shirt to wear, a towel for potential spills and drips, and a toner or hair dye. Before you do anything, check how your hair will react to the bleaching process by performing a strand test as previously described. This way you will know exactly what to expect and what toner to pick to finish the job. This will also minimize the chances of excessive damage and the hair melting.

She covers all things skincare for Byrdie, from ingredients to acne advice. After admitting to Fagiani that I'd gone too far, too fast with bleach before, she recommended I use a pump or two of K18 fresh out of the shower. I've been applying it diligently ever since, and I've noticed wayyyy fewer split ends and less overall damage. Brad Mondo is the founder and CEO of XMONDO, a vegan and cruelty-free haircare brand. He developed his passion for haircare from his late father, who owned and operated a salon. There’s a reason why Schwarzkopf LIVE is such a household name when it comes to bleach and dye and that’s because it’s one of the most reliable options that never disappoints.

According to colorists, these are the greatest professional hair bleaches.

The dust-free powder contains humectants (moisturizers that pull water from the air) to ensure a continually creamy consistency after mixing. This makes it easier to achieve the hand-painted, sweeping effect that gives lightened hair natural-looking depth and dimension. Just know this lightener has a strong smell so make sure there’s good ventilation in your bathroom. L'Oréal makes one of the more affordable professional bleaches out there.

It transforms into a non-drippy, workable paste with up to seven levels of lift. There's plenty to do to preserve your hair's health and bright, sharp color. Olivia says after coloring the hair, keep it out of the sun and wash it less frequently. "You can use a purple shampoo to counteract yellow tones that may develop." As Olivia explains, the health of your hair plays a vital role in bleaching. Hair fraught with split or snarled ends is dehydrated, and chemicals and excessive exposure to bleach can worsen things.

If you feel any discomfort from bleaching, Dr. Ciraldo says to "wash it off immediately, and apply ice or even 1 percent over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream." It’s also a good idea to wear an old shirt that’s no longer in your wardrobe rotation. The best hair bleach will have you feeling like a whole new person, swishing your way from one room to the next. Divide your hair into four quadrants — vertically down the middle line, then horizontally, approximately above your ears. You will need to apply bleach to even smaller sections, but this will be good sectioning to start with.

You're going to want to seek out a product with hydrating ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides to nourish and moisturize the hair shaft. You'll likely also want to see a natural oil, such as avocado oil or olive oil extract. Deep conditioners from Black-owned brands are always A+ options for curly and natural hair, and this one focuses on revitalizing locks after they've been damaged. Customers with natural hair love the product, writing that it didn't weigh down their curls and that it's perfect for penetrating low-porosity hair. It is a heavy-duty option though, so if your hair falls on the finer side of the spectrum, look elsewhere.

L’Oréal Quick Blue Powder: Best bleach for brown hair

"Cream-based humectants fill and seal the hair fiber to lock in moisture and offer slippage to minimize breakage," Hill adds. Though all hair types can experience frizz, curly hair is the most naturally frizz-prone. This is due to the natural shape of curly hair follicles, not styling errors. If your texture is on the coarser, curlier side, you'll need to prioritize hair hydration if you want to reduce flyaways and frizz.

"Use a rosewater spray to help hydrate the skin after bleaching," Tobia suggests; she recommends the "simple" Heritage Store Rosewater Spray ($11), made with purified water and moisturizing rose oil. After you use bleach, make sure to lightly cleanse the affected areas, Tobia says. If skin is irritated or red, Jarosz and Dr. Ciraldo recommend applying soothing aloe vera gel and ice packs; if your skin's good to go, skip aloe and ice in favor of a moisturizing cream or spray.

When breaking out your blow dryer is unavoidable, always prep your hair with a good heat protectant. Your mane is in good hands with the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Weightless Blow Dry Primer, Heat Protectant. This nourishing treatment protects hair against temperatures up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and offers up to 48 hours of frizz control.

Considered the most damaging of the many methods for hair coloring, bleaching tends to damage your hair cuticles. The usual agents used in creating bleach are hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. The depth of hair color can be measured in several levels – generally starting from level 1, which consists of the darkest black/brown color, to level 10, which consists of the lightest blonde shade. Primarily made using sulfonated oil and hydrogen peroxide, you can mix oil bleach with other lightning activators and volume developers. Expect this type of bleach to lighten your hair by three shades effectively. “Pro bleaching chemicals often have greater lifting power,” celebrity colorist Matt Rez reveals. He recommends avoiding using them at home, instead asking your hairdresser if they can lighten your hair with a specific brand.

Remember that the ends are the most damaged part of your hair – if your ends bleach well, the rest of your hair will be fine too. Depending on the result you want to achieve, if you have colored your hair before, you have the option of using a color remover, bleach, or both. Algin may seem like a healthy addition to the formula, however, its main job is to act as a texture improver for the emulsion to help the mixture mix well and glide on the hair. It’s also a humectant keeping the bleach moist as it’s developing, similar to sorbitol in Clairol BW2. One of the ingredients is ultramarine blue color to reduce the brassiness before you even get to the toning stage. Fragrance is also added to create a more pleasant smell during the bleaching process.
